The Matanuska Greenbelt is treasured by residents of the Mat-Su. The greenbelt offers over 30 miles of trails in the heart of the Mat Su Valley. The trails have some of the valley's best mountain biking, are a popular walking destination, and attract cross country skiers in the winter. Located between major thoroughfares, the greenbelt is a refuge and a popular destination among locals. The trails can be combined and looped for varying distance and difficulty, allowing each excursion to be something new.
Trails traverse through hilly, forested moraines, along banks of the area's many lakes, and alongside picturesque farm fields with mountain backdrops. Many of greenbelt's trails are wide enough for walking side-by-side and for winter Nordic skiing, while some trails are winding and narrow – allowing exciting mountain biking, hiking and trail running.
The Matanuska Greenbelt can be accessed at many different trailheads. The main ones include: UAA Mat-Su College off of Trunk Road, Kin-Win Trailhead from Georgeson Road near Trunk Road (free parking); Crevasse-Moraine Trailhead from Loma Prieta Road near the PalmerWasilla Highway (Mat-Su Borough parking fee or season pass required); the Matanuska Lakes State Recreation Area from the Glenn Highway(State parking fee or season pass required); or from Keplar Park on the Glenn Highway (private fee). The Matanuska Greenbelt is managed by four distinct agencies. Please make note differing regulations and parking fees at each trailhead, and follow all posted signs.
