Heinsburg Community Information

Due to the barrier of the North Saskatchewan River, As Alberta and Saskatchewan came into being in 1905 this region began to be settled but with few services available. In 1913 John Heins set up a post office and store in his home near the current Whitney Lake Provincial Park. The next year a ferry started 5 miles south. With the coming of the CNR in 1928, two elevators were built near the river and, like many communities, the town of Heinsburg moved to the Railroad. In 1963 a new bridge replaced the ferry and improved access to the area.

Today the Hamlet of Heinsburg is administered by the County of St Paul # 19 and in 2021 had 60 residents. The Heinsburg School is still operational with an extensive bussing network. There are no gas stations, no food stores and no lodgings available. The Heinsburg Community Club and the Heinsburg Seniors group are the two main community organizations and the maintain the Heinsburg Staging Area and the Railway Museum.
