The Mud Lick Trail leads through a mature beech-maple forest. In summer, the smooth, light gray bark of the beech trees shines in the gloom created by the light-absorbing layers of leaves over 100 feet above. Upon the moist forest floor, you may find the fruits of wildflowers that hastily bloomed in early spring before the sun was hidden by the leaves. One section of the trail follows an unpaved country road last used in the 1940s that once lead over land now covered by Acton Lake.
