Beginning above the Manukā State Wayside, the trail proceeds gently uphill through the Manukā Natural Area Reserve. Hikers enjoy Hawaiian natural history featuring lava flows of different ages, a pit crater, cultural sites and native and non-native species of plants and animals gaining 400 feet in elevation before returning to the north end of the park. Mosquito repellent is recommended. The trail guide provides an excellent introduction to the natural and cultural resources that can be discovered along the trail.
