This trailhead can be found at the back of the Matanuska Loop of the Government Peak Recreation Area. The ambitions Government Peak Race Trail rises 3,800 feet in a mere 3 miles, offering excellent views of the Talkeetna mountains, Knik glacier, and river valley. The hike begins at a moderate climb, getting steeper towards the summit. It is possible to connect to the Blueberry Knoll Trail, making this hike a loop.

Annually on the first Saturday in June, the Government Peak Race draws a crowd who compete for the fastest time to the top of the peak.
