The low, scraggly trees surrounding you are scrub oaks, Quercus illicifolia, and they make up what is referred to as closed scrub oak habitat. Although common on the Vineyard, this habitat is rare worldwide. Since this habitat is so unique, many of the species that depend on it are rare as well. On Quansoo Farm, at least three species of rare moths have been recorded that depend on scrub oak as a host plant.
