NOTE: The River S Unit and Auto Tour Route is closed to all public access Monday through Friday. This includes vehicles and pedestrians. The closure will last through July 2020 as we replace the access bridge with a new, two-lane bridge. The River S Unit will be open Saturdays and Sundays during the project. Visit www.refuge2020.info for more information.
The River S Unit is home to Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge's famous Auto Tour Route, where your car is your mobile viewing blind. You can even download an audio tour to play while you slowly drive the 4-mile loop. From May 1st to September 30th, you can also stop along the Auto Tour at the Kiwa Trail - an easy, immersive walk through wetlands and forest habitats.
If you brought your dog along and were disappointed to find out that they are not permitted on the Refuge, you're in luck. Dogs are permitted to be with you along the Auto Tour Route, as long as they stay in your vehicle at all times. To let them burn off some energy before entering the Refuge, visit the City of Ridgefield dog park right at the River S entrance at the corner of Refuge Road and Hillhurst Road!
