The headwater of Cowboy Creek is this 40-acre wetlands, about half of which is in a designated Natural Area Preserve of the Borough of Hopatcong. The Creek flows west crossing Sparta-Stanhope Road just south of the Library, terminating into Lubbers Run creek in Byram Township on the property of Wild West City, hence the suspected source of the creek’s name.

The wetland's water level varies by season and is also highly dependent on the height of the beaver dam at the creek's outflow into Cowboy Creek. The Lake Hopatcong Trail/Highlands Trail crosses the creek at the wetland outflow. Crossing can be hazardous during periods of high wetlands water levels.
