This area of the Glenwood Preserve presents an excellent example of a Chaparral plant community. Chaparall is made up of shrubland plants such as Scrub Oak (Quercus berberidifolia) and Coyote Brush (Baccharis pilularis). Some say that Chaparral refers to how the spanish colonists used "chaps" when riding horses through the shrubland to avoid being scratched by the sharp leaves and branches of these plants.
