The East Walker River area hosts a rich diversity of landscapes from lush riverside forest to towering cliffs and volcanoes to ancient lakebeds. Visitors can find wildlife, both large and small, and evidence of human history from time when this was a busy corridor between mining towns.

This area is remote with little access to cellular service and no paved roads. While State Park staff visit Bighorn Campground and Nine-Mile Ranch each day in summer, side roads are not patrolled. Potable water is only available at Nine-Mile Ranch during the summer when a volunteer is on site. Bring plenty of food, water, and fuel for your visit.

The weather here is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Even on a warm spring day, the temperature can drop quickly after sunset so bring warm clothes and sleeping gear. Water levels in East Walker River can fluctuate rapidly during the day so use caution if crossing the river, it may be deeper when you come back.

The roads used in this trail are open to motorized vehicle traffic. They are rated for their typical condition. Conditions can change during wet weather so pay close attention to the road.

- Green = Well maintained gravel or dirt roads.

- Yellow = Dirt or gravel roads that may be steep, narrow, sandy, or rocky.

- Orange = Narrow, steep roads with large rocks, washouts, and stream crossings.

- Red = Very steep, loose rocks, experienced drivers recommended.
