Hele 101: Cleaning Your Gear!

Many invasive plants and animals can be found along trails and other disturbed areas. They are excellent hitchhikers and can spread easily-both between islands AND across an island.

Here some ways to keep your gear clean:

Shoes - Scrub off all soil and debris while making sure to loosen shoelaces to inspect shoe tongues and remove any hiding seeds and bits of dirt. Finishing off with a spray of 70% rubbing alcohol helps to protect ʻōhiʻa from Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death fungus.

Bags - Open and remove all contents to inspect for seeds and bits of dirt

Clothing - Wash in hot soapy water before your next hike

Always enter an area with clear gear!

You can prevent the spread of invasive species and Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death by cleaning mud and dirt from your footwear, bikes, vehicles, and gear before AND after traveling. Mahalo!
