Exotic - To Be... Non-native Ardisia

Information provided by
Indian River County

Shoebutton Ardisia or Ardisia elliptica is another natural area invader in conservation areas especially hardwood hammocks. This plant is very similar to our native ardisia, commonly called marlberry – They are so similar that they can often be mistaken for the invasive and vice versa. When working in a native habitat identification is the key! So make sure that you can tell the difference between these two plants. It’s important that when working to eradicate any invasive exotic species that you can clearly identify the plant and that it isn’t a similar native species. Our staff are trained to identify native versus non-native species.
