Fancy a round of golf that doesn’t require you to wear a pink-collared shirt or lug a bag of heavy clubs? Welcome to disc golf—the other kind of golf.
Disc golf is popular here in Bend’s high desert oasis, with public courses available at Pine Nursery Disc Golf Course and Mt. Bachelor as well as courses in outlying areas like Redmond, Prineville, and Black Butte. There are also several local events dedicated to disc golf, including the Lava Launch in August and the Disc Go Ball in April.
Disc golf is played much like traditional golf, but with a flying disc or Frisbee. Competitors throw a disc from the tee area to a target, which is the equivalent of a hole in regular golf. As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw has landed. Trees, shrubs, and terrain changes provide challenging obstacles for the golfer. It’s fun for all ages, and challenging for disc golfers of all skill levels.
