KAMEHAMENUI FOREST WILDLIFE CONTROL HUNT ANNOUNCED

Hunter assistance requested between August 15 and October 31

(HONOLULU) – The Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DLNR DOFAW) announces the opening of a controlled hunt for feral goats and axis deer within the Kamehamenui Forest Reserve on the island of Maui.

The Kamehamenui Forest Reserve was purchased and set aside for the protection and preservation of Hawaiʻi’s unique native species and ecosystems. The initial phase in ecosystem restoration begins with the removal of feral ungulates within the upper fence unit. Hunters are requested to assist with the removal of these ungulates. Biologists estimate approximately 50 ungulates within the control unit, with most being feral goats. The controlled hunt within Kamehamenui Forest Reserve is scheduled to begin on Thursday, August 15, 2024, and end on October 31, 2024.

Participating hunters must follow the policies and procedures below to participate in this control activity:

1. AvalidStateofHawaiʻihuntinglicenseisrequiredtoparticipate.
2. Priortocheckinginandenteringthecontrolarea,huntersmustreadtheposted

   Kamehamenui Forest Reserve wildlife control permit located at the Kula Forest

   Reserve hunter check station.

3. Bysigningthecheck-insheet,huntersacknowledgereadingtheKamehamenui

   Forest Reserve wildlife control permit and agree to abide by all terms and

   conditions.

4. Huntersmustcheckinandcheckoutofthecontrolareaattheestablishedhunter

   check station and provide all required information, including the number of axis

   deer and feral goats harvested.

5. Onlyhunterslistedonthechecksheetswillbeallowedinthecontrolarea.

1. HuntersmustabidebyHawaiʻiAdministrativeRulesTitle13,Chapters121and 123 as applicable to this permit and any general conditions and restrictions set forth by the DLNR DOFAW.
2. Amapofthearea,includingthelocationoftheentryandaccesspointintothe control unit, will be posted at the established hunter check station. Hunters are advised to review the map to familiarize themselves with the area.
