AmeriCorps NJ Watershed Area Ambassador, Ritwik Menon teamed up with volunteers at Horseshoe Bend Park to install over 110 feet of "waterbars" to control erosion caused by heavy rains and snow melt.
Waterbars direct to surface water off the trail and slow its decent down hill to reduce or eliminate erosion. Seven volunteers and Ritwik placed pressure treated timbers and secured them with rebar into the ground. The uphill side of the waterbar was then filled with crushed stone and covered with wood chips.
The installation was based on the United States Forest Service design and modified to allow for ease of hiking.
Many thanks to Ritwick and the volunteers, Caroline and Rob Nuckols, Mara Tippett, Mike Larue, Jack MacConnell, Chuck Kolvites, and Richard Dodds, who came out on a cold March day to make this event successful!
