*Tar Hollow Closures - January 1, 2025*

Tar Hollow State Park is set to undergo a major transformation, with improvement projects designed to improve visitor amenities and recreational experiences. The planned improvements will result in the following temporary closures:

All the electric sites, general store, nature center, beach, flush restrooms, shower house and non- electric sites in the main part of the park will be closed. The drive-in campground is expected to reopen in Spring 2026.

The Northridge non-electric campgrounds will be open for reservations. The four non-electric shelter houses on the ridge (Lookout, Pine Point, Sheep’s, and Dogwood Shelter) will be open for reservations.

Originally inhabited by the Shawnee people, the area surrounding Van Buren was the American Indians’ stronghold before they moved west. First set aside as a wildlife preserve, the park is quietly tucked away in a small remnant of woodland surrounded by picturesque farm fields. The park’s 296 beautiful acres offer a tranquil retreat. Enjoy year-round opportunities for camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and picnicking. Van Buren offers a calm and peaceful atmosphere.
