More than 85,000 acres of magnificent desert are open for off-highway exploration and recreation within the boundaries portrayed on the park map are operated by California State Parks, OHMVR Division. Outside the boundaries, to the south and east, large tracts of BLM land (U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management) are also open to off-highway vehicles. The western boundary and part of the northern boundary connect with the 600,000-acre Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, which is closed to off-highway recreation, but open to exploration by highway-legal vehicles along established primitive roads.

Accessibility Description
California State Parks supports equal access. Prior to arrival, visitors with disabilities who need assistance should call 760-767-5393, or 711, TTY relay service.
- Holmes Camp: Camping is permitted almost anywhere, but there are two developed accessible sites with hard surfaces, compliant furnishings, and shade structures at this popular camping area. The adjacent vault restroom building has accessible toilets and showers.
- Discovery Center: The Discovery Center is located near the park office and is generally accessible including parking, path of travel, and exhibits. Outside the center, visitors will find concrete walkways that connect covered shade ramadas along a loop trail that includes access to the park amphitheater.
- Restrooms, showers, and routes: In addition to Holmes Camp, accessible showers and toilets are located at the restroom/shower building on Ranger Station Road and at the restroom adjacent to the park office and Discovery Center. In the remote areas of the park, vault toilets are accessible but they are surrounded by unstable soft sand and wheelchair users may find it difficult to maneuver outside the buildings.
