In the 1850s, the Lake Erie islands earned the nickname “Wine Islands” when they were purchased for grape production. Since the early 20th century, Lonz Winery was a familiar landmark at Middle Bass. After its closure, the state acquired the complex, featuring a marina and acres of undeveloped Lake Erie shoreline. Today, a modern marina offers day-use and overnight boat slips, complemented by a harbormaster building with modern conveniences.
