Mallaig Community Information
The first settlers to come to this area in 1906. The town was named in 1928 as the railway arrived. With the arrival of train service, the town grew with leaps and bounds. There were grocery, general and hardware stores, a blacksmith, a garage, a hotel, a rooming house and restaurant, four grain elevators, three farm implement agencies, a stockyard, and livery barns.
Today the Hamlet of Mallaig is administered by the County of St Paul # 19 and in 2021 had 219 residents. It has an active school. The main organizations are the Mallaig & District Museum, the Chamber of Commerce and various recreational clubs. The main event each year is the first weekend in August when it hosts thousands of tourists at “Haying in the Thirties” which raises funds to help families battling cancer with their expenses.
