George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area

Slow down next to the river. This shaded park opened to the public in the 1950s, offering family-friendly recreation opportunities in the heart of the Central Valley.

This restful, shady area alongside the meandering Merced River is popular with anglers. You'll find an abundance of rainbow trout, catfish, bass, and perch, depending on the time of year. Scenic picnic spots are available under the towering cottonwoods and sycamores. Families enjoy overnight camping, exploring the natural habitat along the river, and wildlife watching. The calm, cool waters winding through the park provides relief from the valley's summer heat, as well as a spot for floating, canoeing, and kayaking.
